Metal Sculptures at Galleta Meadows Borrego Springs
Borrego Springs is one of the go to places for many locals in Southern California, not just for the beautiful landscape of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park but also for the beautiful metal sculptures found around the town of Borrego Springs, which is right in the middle of the state park! The large camel sculpture with the young baby nursing is a nice one, see above.
One of the more famous and easy to find sculptures is the large serpent that spans both sides of Borrego Springs Road. Here’s a link to the exact point. The image below shows the head but the tail is on the other side of the road! Be sure to arrive early in the day because the serpent sculpture will get crowded with people and everyone is trying to take photos.
There are over 130 or so sculptures scattered around the north and south part of Borrego Springs and all were created by Ricardo A. Breceda who was commissioned to do them for Galleta Meadows. Some of the sculptures are close to the road, like the serpent sculpture below, but most you need to drive on dirt roads, which are fairly easy that any two wheel drive car can do. Its sort of a cool art treasure hunt! For families, this is a great way to spend the day.
Don’t forget, in the summer its VERY hot, so take lots of water, or better yet, visit during the spring/fall/winter months, the weather is beautiful at that time.
Also don’t forget to view my other article on Anza-Borrego State Desert Park and its cool views at Fonts Point!
